Germans drink a lot of coffee. Currently, the port of Hamburg is the world’s busiest place for coffee trading. Coffee is almost always freshly made from ground coffee or beans - instant is rare. Over the past few years, American coffee house chain Starbucks has expanded into Germany, and McDonald’s McCafe has existed in Germany even BEFORE they opened McCafes in the USA, but, mostly, you will encounter individual street cafés, offering a large selection of icecreams, cakes, and pastries to go along with the coffee. Germany is #3 worldwide in coffee consumption, it also is Europe’s largest consumer. Per capita consumption (2010) was 153 liters, beating both water and beer. Table and spring water consumption totaled 136 liters; beer came to 107.
